Reverse rollover to an employer plan

A reverse rollover moves eligible IRA assets into an employer retirement plan. It requires both tax eligibility and a receiving plan that accepts the transfer.

2025 standard rules · 2026 form projections

Legal rollover eligibility and a plan's actual acceptance are separate checks. This screen evaluates a standard pre-tax transfer only; inherited accounts, required distributions and other restricted amounts need review.

Review required before modeling a plan rollover

  • Confirm the individual plan accepts incoming pre-tax IRA rollovers.

Questions for your plan administrator

  • Does the plan accept incoming IRA rollovers and this source account?
  • What evidence distinguishes eligible pre-tax money from after-tax basis?
  • What administrator forms, account codes and signatures are needed?
  • What processing deadline applies before December 31?
  • What fees and investment restrictions apply?
  • If a Solo 401(k), is the plan validly established and am I eligible?
  • If a SIMPLE IRA is involved, has the two-year participation requirement been met?

Model a confirmed eligible rollover

Questions for the plan administrator

Request confirmation of accepted account types, pretax-only treatment, required documents and processing time. Do not assume every 401(k) accepts IRA rollovers or that an existing account guarantees eligibility.

  • Will this plan accept the specific IRA assets?
  • How will after-tax basis be excluded?
  • What is the actual processing deadline?
  • Are any SIMPLE IRA restrictions relevant?

Model the completed outcome

Only treat the planned transfer as reducing year-end IRA assets when the scenario's eligibility and timing assumptions are satisfied. A scenario savings estimate is not authorization to move money.
